My filming trip to South Africa, with Chester Zoo and Mantis Hotels.
I recently travelled to South Africa, and right down to Port Elizabeth too - needless to say the journey was a long one. The long journey (about 25 hours) is easier to cope with when you are confident that you will have some unique and amazing experiences once you are there.
And I was not dissappointed. I had a fair bit of kit with me (possibly even too much, but better safe than sorry) tripods, sound gear, various cameras, lights, and even a drone. The drone, a tiny mavic air, captured some truly impressive scenes - which you can see soon in another blog post.
Some of the most memorable moments happened in the space of our first game drive when we arrived at Mantis Hotel The Founders Lodge, which is one of the most incredible places I have ever stayed at. We had a large herd of elephants pass right by the Jeep within touching distance, and when we stopped for sunset, two young male lions were relaxing together laying on the ground nearby.
I have recently finished the film for Chester Zoo, which is a combination of interviews and footage taken whilst on drives and at the varioius incredible hotels at The Mantis Collection. Whilst the full film is ten minutes long, I thought I would include a small snippet of it here - to show how I interspersed both the interviews with the more cinematic animal footage.
