The importance of creating film work for yourself!
Obviously, it’s important to keep the bills paid, but bill paying isn’t why you got into this game, it sure as hell isn’t why I did.
I try, at least once every few months - to make sure I work on a project where there are no external factors influencing my creativity. This means that I can take the project in the direction I want to, where I get a certain level of creative satisfaction from it. This sounds like a simple premise, but it is one that can easily slip up once you get snowed under with edits for corporate videos or the like.
Taking the following as an example, this project was a purely creative one, no funding, no financial incentive, just done with the aim of creating.
It’s going to be a short film based on two avid young rowers from Chester. With a strong emphasis on the cinematography, it features dark warm tones, minimal lighting and is shot in a suspenseful manner.
Take a look at some screengrabs from the first filming session… shot on the Ursa Mini Pro and the Pocket 4k, both by Blackmagic Cameras. The full film will be released in the next month or so!
